Player of the Week – Nazareth College
EJ Wells-Spicer, Senior, Setter – Phelps, NY/Midlakes
Wells-Spicer was named MVP of the UVC Championship Tournament as he helped Nazareth to the league title for the third year in a row as the Golden Flyers won three matches over the weekend. Nazareth defeated Penn State-Behrend 3-1 in the quarterfinals, cruised passed Vassar, 3-0 in the semifinals on Saturday and completed the tournament with a 3-0 win in the finals against Stevens.
Against Behrend Wells-Spicer amassed 50 assists and added eight digs. The senior handed out 44 assists against Vassar as the Golden Flyers' attack finished with a hitting percentage of .500. Nazareth finished with a 6-0 advantage in service aces, including three aces by Wells-Spicer in a span of four points to close the first set. In the championship match, he collected 39 assists and distributed four service aces.
The Golden Flyers, 34-1 overall and ranked second nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, gained the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and will play UC Santa Cruz (15-7) in the first round April 26 at 5:30 p.m. at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
