MIT sophomore Tavish Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif.) earned his first award from the United Volleyball Conference after being selected as the league's Player of the Week on Monday. In a 2-0 season-opening weekend for the Engineers, he totaled 23 kills, a .488 hitting percentage, seven digs, and three blocks.
Smith started Saturday's tri-match with 10 kills on 17 errorless hitting attempts for a .588 percentage in a 26-24, 25-13, 25-13 win over Emerson College. Later in the day, he generated 13 kills, a .423 hitting percentage, five digs, and two blocks in a 25-15, 25-19, 25-27, 25-18 decision versus Daniel Webster College.
