WILKES BARRE, PA – Sage's men's volleyball team travelled to Wilkes University for a non-conference tri-match with the College of Mt. St. Vincent. Sage opened the day beating the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-16). The winning streak continued as they beat the host Colonels, 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18). The wins put Sage at 3-10 overall and winners of three of the team's last four matches.
Against the Dolphins of the College of Mt. St. Vincent, senior captain Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) connected for 14 kills with a .241 attack percentage with 16.0 points and five digs, and a solo block.
Sage senior middle hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) had 13 kills as well with a .579 attack percentage with 14.5 points after also hauling in eight digs with a block assist.
Junior setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) added 36 setting assists with two digs and five kills and a pair of aces. Sophomore opposite Deshawn Fleary (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception Montclair) added 9.0 points on seven kills with a .500 attack percentage and six digs with two aces. Sophomore Sherwin Bentick (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception Montclair) added two aces for the Gators as they combined for nine aces with a .345 attack percentage in the contest. They held the Dolphins to a -.065 attack percentage as well in the victory.
Against Wilkes, Wenz added 20 kills with 22.0 points and a double-double as he also had 14 digs with three total blocks. Senior Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) added 11.0 points with eight kills, seven digs and four block assists. Martel collected 13 kills with six digs, a block assists and an ace. Jennings had 41 setting assists with three aces, four kills and a dig in the match. Fleary added eight digs with six kills.
On the 2020 season, several of Sage's players are continuing to rewrite the career record book. Wenz is now fifth in career kills with 556 kills. He is third in solo blocks (51), third in block assists (144) and third in total blocks (195), fifth in points (727.0), while also now ranking 10th with his 302 digs. Jennings has moved into the No. 2 spot in career setting assists with 1,443 ahead of Casey Fitzpatrick (1,401, 2015-2019).
Sage will be in action on February 12 travelling to New York University for a UVC match with the Violets at 7 p.m.
