The MIT men's volleyball team opened the 2023 season with a 3-0 victory over Regis on Saturday afternoon in Rockwell Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Set 1: The Engineers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on the serve on senior
Troy Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) to open the match. Back-to-back kills from senior
Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) gave MIT an 18-10 advantage and forced a Pride timeout. Out of the break, MIT outscored Regis 7-5 to take set one. MIT hit .308 and held the Pride to a -.087 hitting percentage in the set.

Set 2: After the two teams exchanged leads early in the set, MIT went on an 11-3 run to force a Pride timeout. A kill from Oliveira out of the break made it a 14-5 contest, but the Pride used a 5-3 run to make it a 17-10 match, but MIT finished the set on an 8-4 run capped by a Gustafson kill to seal the set.

Set 3: The Pride pulled out to a 5-2 lead to force the Engineers to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, MIT went on a 6-1 run to take an 8-6 lead. With MIT in the lead 18-14, Regis went on a 6-4 run to get to within two points at 22-20, but the Engineers scored the next three points to take the set and the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT hit .410 as a team and held the Pride to a -.015 hitting percentage.
- Oliveira and Gustafson led the team with 11 kills each in the match. Oliveira also posted a team-leading five digs.

Albert Luo (Dallas, Texas) recorded a team-high 18 assists followed by junior
Max Turner (Chandler, Ariz.) with 10.

Orlando Plagata led the Pride with eight kills and
Tyrell Bucasas led the team with 14 assists.
