PITTSFORD, NY – The No. 8 St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team (18-5, 2-2 UVC) swept the Elmira College Soaring Eagles (10-5, 2-2 UVC) in three-sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) Wednesdat night, extending their current win streak to five, and more importantly evening their conference record to 2-2.
With the backing of a strong crowd, the Cardinals opened a 7-3 lead in the first set. Spreading the ball around was the key for the offensive attack, using kills from Matt Beiter, Evan Ingerick, Jake Baker, Josh Bigford, and Gabe La Robardiere to open the advantage. The set remained a four-point difference throughout, forcing a timeout from Elmira down 17-13. With the score 21-17, a ball played off the foot of Ingerick helped to extend the advantage to six, 24-18. The set ended on an Elmira attack error, giving Fisher the 25-18 set win.
The first point of the second featured strong defense on both ends, with the result in Fisher's favor, coming on a kill from setter Gavin Newman. The lead opened to six following two aces from Baker and a block from Griffin Stella and Gabe La Robardiere. The lead stretched to seven on another pivotal block from G. La Robardiere, with Fisher up 21-14. From there, a kill from Bigford, his eighth of the day, helped solidify the second set, 25-17.
Into the third, Elmira took their first lead of the day, up 3-2. But the lead would not be long-lasting, as Fisher took back control up 8-7, and used a 8-1 run to move the score to 16-8. An ace from Casey Jackson helped to extend the lead to nine, up 18-9, helping to push momentum in the Cardinals favor. From there, Fisher took their largest advantage of the day at nine on a kill from G. La Robardiere, moving the score to 20-9. But Elmira contested, shrinking the deficit to seven before Fisher could retaliate using an ace from Bigford to cap off the third set and sweep 25-16.
With the win, Fisher moves to fourth place in the UVC standings, with a 2-2 record in conference play. As a team, Fisher hit .307 with Baker leading the offense with nine kills across 20 attempts. Fisher used seven aces to just eight errors in the win, three of which came from Baker, to back the win.
Fisher will return to the court on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m., when they host Penn State Behrend (11-5).
