POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The No. 3 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team collected 16 total blocks as the Brewers won their 11th straight match to begin the season with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of Baruch on Saturday at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers improve to 11-0 overall on the season while the Bearcats drop to 4-6 overall.
First Set
- Baruch opened the set with a 7-3 advantage behind two kills from Kory Lingenfelter and a winner each from Noah Pak and Peter Gavroff.
- VC battled back to take a 10-9 lead after two kills from senior Billy Fan along with a winner each from senior Tobias Clark and junior James Zuckerman.
- The lead expanded to 17-10 following an ace from senior Payne Lounsbery and a kill from first year Shawn Zheng.
- The Bearcats drew even at 18 all on a five-point run behind two winners from Noah Pak and a Lingenfelter ace.
- Following Baruch tying the set at 22, Vassar took the first set behind a kill and an ace from sophomore Armaan Desai.
Second Set
- Vassar raced out to an 8-1 lead on three kills from Zheng and two blocks from Desai.
- The Bearcats cut the advantage down to 12-6 on an ace from Pak before Vassar pushed the lead to 19-12 on a winner from senior Gavin Akoto.
- Baruch would get within five on another ace from Pak at 20-15.
- Two kills from Clark along with one winner from Zheng clinched the second set.
Third Set
- VC went ahead 7-4 early in the third set, led by a kill each from Akoto, Zheng and Desai.
- Lingenfelter's kill got Baruch within one at 11-10 before the Brewers went on a run behind blocks from Fan, Desai, Akoto and first year Henry Bonney.
- Three consecutive kills from Gavroff trimmed the Vassar lead down to 21-17.
- The Brewers closed the sweep with the final four points of the set on a kill from Zheng and an ace from first year Stuart Dow.
For The Brewers
- Zheng led the way with 12 kills (.647), three blocks and two digs while Desai finished with four kills, two aces and six blocks (two solo).
- Clark added six kills and a block along with Fan tallying four kills, six blocks and two digs.
- Bonney recorded three winners and five blocks while Lounsbery handed out a team-high 21 assists and lifted five digs.
- Sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted a team-high six digs.
For The Bearcats
- Gavroff finished with a team-high 10 kills while Pak added six kills, three aces and nine digs.
- Ari Osmanaj registered five winners along with Lingenfelter recording five kills and eight digs.
- Ryan Oommen tallied 19 assists and 12 digs.
