PURCHASE, NY – The No. 19 MIT men's volleyball team opened the 2026 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Purchase College on Friday night at the SUNY Purchase Gymnasium.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 3, Purchase 0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-18)
- Records: MIT 1-0 Overall, Purchase 1-2 Overall
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: With the set tied at 10, the Engineers rattled off seven-straight points to go up 17-10. Coming out of a timeout, Purchase scored two of the next three points to make it a 21-12 set, but a kill from Braeden Baker put MIT back up 10 as the Engineers went on to take set one, 25-15.
- Set 2: Hansen Fan gave the Engineers an early 6-3 lead. Purchase made it a two-point set at 8-6, however a 12-3 run helped MIT pull ahead as a kill from Nate Toth made it 20-9. Back-to-back kills from Toth and Carlos Rijos secured the 25-12 set win.
- Set 3: The Panthers used a 6-1 run to pull to within three at 18-15 but MIT held on as a kill from Alexander Garrett sealed the 25-18 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Garrett led the Engineers with eight kills followed by Jensen Fiskin with five.
- Toth finished with four kills and a team-high three aces. He also had three digs.
- Kevin Windisch had five digs, and Nathaniel Black collected 13 assists.
- MIT held the Panthers to a -.032 hitting percentage while the Engineers hit .391 in the match.
- Eleven different Engineers recorded a kill in the victory.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, January 17 as they travel to Rutgers-Newark for a tri-match. MIT will take on Arcadia at 1:00 PM followed by a 3:00 PM match against the Scarlet Raiders.
