No. 15 MIT Grabs 3-0 Sweep of Elms

CHICOPEE, MA – The No. 15 MIT men's volleyball team defeated Elms, 3-0 on Friday night at Picknelly Arena.  MIT moved to 11-2 overall in 2026.

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Elms 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) 
  • Records: MIT 11-2 Overall, Elms 11-3 Overall   

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: The teams stayed close throughout the early portions of the set as an ace from Nicholas Uschmann cut the MIT lead to one at 15-14. The Engineers then pulled away, closing out the set on a 10-5 run as a Blazer attack error gave MIT the 25-19 set one victory.  
  • Set 2: In a set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes, the Engineers were able to contain the Blazers to take a 2-0 advantage. With the set tied at 12, a kill from Alexander Garrett kick-started a 6-1 MIT run which helped to propel the Engineers to the 25-20 win. 
  • Set 3: Back-to-back kills from Maddox Brandenburg and Colin Zimmerman gave the Engineers the lead, which they would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Kills from Ryan Espinoza and Garrett gave MIT match point, and an Elms service error clinched the 25-16 win for the Engineers.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Garrett led MIT with 12 kills followed by Nate Toth with 10. 
  • Zimmerman paced the Engineers with 29 assists. He also tacked on two kills and an ace. 
  • Garrett and Espinoza each had eight digs in the match. Espinoza also had two blocks. 
  • John Bellafronte contributed eight kills for the hosts. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers are back on the court tomorrow, Saturday, February 20 for a road tri-match. MIT will open competition at 1:00 PM for a UVC match against No. 16 New Paltz followed by a 3:00 PM tilt against St. Joseph's University Long Island.
