NEW PALTZ, NY — The No. 8 State University of New York New Paltz extended its winning streak to 11 following a quick 3-0 sweep of visiting Edgewood College Monday in the Hawk Center.
The two teams struggling from the service line, combining for 30 service errors — 15 apiece — which moved the game along swiftly. Ultimately, the Hawks (19-5 overall, 4-0 conference) was more efficient offensively, totaling more points (50-41), kills (41-30), assists (39-29) and out-hit the visitors, .313-.268. The Eagles (7-10, 4-4) also struggled in serve-receive as they tallied eight reception errors, resulting in eight aces for SUNY New Paltz.
The Hawks started pulling away in the latter part of set one, as a kill from Daniel Shanley allowed the hosts to side out and extend the advantage, 14-12 and the team then proceeded to score eight on the next 11 points with Matt Teplanksy getting up for back-to-back kills on emphatic spikes from the right side to boost the advantage, 21-15. Shanley eventually pushed SUNY New Paltz to set point with Edgewood serving into the net two points later to end the first, 25-19 in favor of the Hawks.
SUNY New Paltz got out to a 17-11 lead in the second following a kill by Shanley, but the Eagles stormed back to get within one at 18-17. Krish Jain and Teplansky connected on back-to-back swings to create a three-point cushion, which the Hawks sustained the rest of the way. Matt Marusza set Shanley for set point before Edgewood served long two points later to solidify the 25-22 set two outcome.

A 4-0 run midway through the third pushed SUNY New Paltz out in front. Mike Handell smashed a kill off a free ball to start the stretch with Teplansky serving the next three points, tallying an ace and then a kill to help his team to a 16-12 lead. The Eagles tied the score at 18-and 19-all before taking their first lead since the opening sequence of the period, as a kill brought Edgewood up, 22-10. However, SUNY New Paltz made sure to anchor in and it ended the match on five unanswered points.
Teplansky sided out for the Hawks and after a hitting error from the Eagles, tallied another kill. Matt Kudlinski was key from the service line, playing in the last four balls resulting in two-straight hitting errors to end the match, 25-22 Hawks.
Teplansky was the catalyst, totaling a game-high 14 kills on 23 attempts to hit an efficient .522 in the match, while adding four aces and five digs for a game-high 18 points. Shanley followed with 10 kills, four assists, three aces and five digs for 13 points. Marusza totaled a game-high 34 assists, while adding a kill and three digs.
SUNY New Paltz concludes its final three regular season matches next week on the road all against UVC competition, starting March 25 at NYU.
