Vassar Earns Road Sweep Over Russell Sage

Brewers improve to 10-8, head to Nichols on Friday

ALBANY, NY - The Vassar College Men's Volleyball team returned to the court for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday evening as the Brewers rolled to a dominant 25-22, 25-19, 25-13 road sweep over Russell Sage in non-conference action. Vassar's record improves to 10-8 overall while the Gators fall to 7-15 on the season.

First Set
  • Following a 4-4 tie to open the match, VC used a kill apiece from first year Darwin Davis, junior Walter Birnbaum and junior Parker Schoenl along with an ace from Davis to go ahead 8-4.
  • The lead expanded to 11-5 after a kill and an ace from junior Armaan Desai and a winner from Birnbaum.
  • Dylan Fox's kill cut the lead to 12-8 until kills from Davis and first year George Idowu and a Birnbaum ace pushed the Brewers advantage to 15-8.
  • A four-point run from the Gators, capped by a kill from Anthony Guetti and a Fox ace, drew Sage back within 18-14.
  • Sage trimmed the lead down to 22-20 after two kills from John Lindheimer until VC used a kill from Idowu and consecutive kills from Davis to take the opening set.
Second Set
  • After a Lindheimer kill tied the set at three, Vassar scored the next eight points as Davis, Desai and junior Enzo Bertini each buried a kill along with Desai and Bertini both recording solo blocks.
  • A winner and an ace each from Guetti and Lindheimer reduced the lead to 17-12 before the Brewers pushed the lead to 20-12 on another kill from Bertini.
  • A block from Evan Devine and a kill from Dylan Fox put the Gators back within six at 23-17.
  • Sophomore Shawn Zheng's kill and a Sage service error helped the Brewers take a 25-19 set victory.
Third Set
  • Two winners and a solo block from Desai along with a Bertini kill gave Vassar a 6-4 lead early in the third set.
  • VC ballooned its lead to 12-6 as Desai buried three more kills and landed an ace.
  • Two kills from Idowu, two aces from Birnbaum and a block from Bertini and Idowu expanded the lead to 19-8.
  • Vassar cruised to the sweep following a kill from Davis, an ace from Bertini and a solo block from Desai.
For The Brewers
  • Desai finished with nine kills on a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage along with two aces and five blocks (three solo).
  • Davis garnered eight kills, an ace, two blocks and three digs while Bertini posted six kills, an ace, two blocks (one solo) and two digs.
  • Birnbaum chipped in four kills and three aces along with Idowu and Zheng each tallying four kills.
  • Schoenl finished with 21 assists while first year Kaden Chen posted 10 assists and two digs.
For The Gators
  • Fox registered nine kills and an ace while Lindheimer totaled seven kills and four digs.
  • Marcus Gentile recorded four winners along with Guetti tallying three kills, 20 assists, three aces and three digs.
