Vassar Pushes Winning Streak to Four Against NJCU, Hunter

Brewers have rattled off four straight sweeps to improve to 13-8 overall

NEW YORK, NY - The Vassar College Men's Volleyball team moved its winning streak to four straight matches on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers swept NJCU 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 while hitting .588 as a team (highest since 2024) in the opening match. Vassar registered its fourth consecutive sweep in the nightcap after defeating Hunter 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 to improve to 13-8 overall.

First Set
  • Vassar took an early 5-2 lead following kills from juniors Armaan Desai and Walter Birnbaum and sophomore Henry Bonney and a block from Desai and sophomore Petar Miocinovic.
  • The lead expanded to 10-2 on an ace from Miocinovic before NJCU cut the lead to 11-5 on a kill from Amaru Perales.
  • Marcus Pardasie's winner put the Gothic Knights within 14-8 until two kills from Miocinovic and a kill from sophomore Shawn Zheng put VC ahead 17-9.
  • The Brewers advantage ballooned to 22-10 on two kills from Zheng and a block from senior James Zuckerman, Birnbaum and Zheng.
  • VC closed the set with a 25-12 win after consecutive winners from Zheng and first year Kaden Chen.
Second Set
  • Vassar pulled in front 5-3 behind two kills from Desai and a winner from junior Parker Schoenl.
  • Pardasie's kill brought NJCU within 6-5 before Vassar went on an 8-1 run to score a 14-6 lead.
  • The run was spurred by two kills from Bonney, a kill and two aces from Birnbaum and a block from Bonney and Zuckerman.
  • VC expanded the lead to 19-8 after a kill apiece from Zheng and Zuckerman and a block from Desai, Bonney and Miocinovic.
  • The Brewers rolled to the second set victory following a winner from Zheng and a block from Desai, Zheng and first year Darwin Davis.
Third Set
  • Vassar raced out to a 6-0 lead following two kills from Miocinovic, one winner each from Bonney and Desai and blocks from Desai, Bonney and Miocinovic.
  • The lead rolled up to 13-4 after back-to-back kills from Zuckerman and Davis along with an ace from Miocinovic.
  • Victor De Souza's winner trimmed the advantage to 16-7 before aces from Miocinovic and Chen and kills from Chen, Zheng and Bonney pushed the lead to 21-8.
  • Kills from Pardasie and Perales pulled the Gothic Knights within 22-13 but two more winners from Davis completed the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Bonney totaled nine kills (.818) and three blocks along with Zheng tallying nine kills (.471), two blocks and two digs.
  • Desai added five kills (.625) and five blocks while Miocinovic recorded six kills (.857), six assists, three aces, three blocks and eight digs.
  • Davis posted four winneres and two digs while Birnbaum and Zuckerman registered three kills each.
  • Schoenl handed out 21 assists and lifted three digs.
For The Gothic Knights
  • Pardasie tallied a match-high 13 kills and two digs while Perales added six kills.
  • De Souza garnered four kills along with Alex Casais finishing with 24 assists and two kills.

First Set
  • The Brewers held an early 4-1 lead following a kill from first year George Idowu and a block from Davis and Idowu.
  • Hunter drew even at five after kills from Emmanuel Cochran and Sebastian Gomez before Vassar pulled back ahead 8-5.
  • The Hawks took the lead at 9-8 on two aces from Brandon Yeh and two kills from Demetri Gournelos.
  • VC used a 7-1 run following a kill each from Birnbaum and Schoenl, an ace from Davis and a block from Schoenl and Idowu to go ahead 15-10.
  • Three winners from junior Enzo Bertini expanded the advantage to 21-13.
  • Vassar took the opening set after a kill each from Desai and Birnbaum.
Second Set
  • The Hawks went ahead 4-2 early after a kill from Wyatt Kotuk and Cochran until VC scored six straight points following two kills from Davis, a winner from Birnbaum and an ace from Idowu.
  • VC expanded the lead to 12-5 on an ace from first year Matthew Leger and pushed it to 17-8.
  • Hunter cut the deficit to 18-13 on a block from Kotuk and Gournelos before Vassar pushed it back to six on a Desai winner.
  • Kotuk's ace trimmed the lead to 21-17 but Vassar used a kill each from Idowu, Zheng and Desai and a set-clinching block from Idowu and Bertini to win 25-18.
Third Set
  • Vassar gained an 8-4 lead after three kills from Miocinovic and an ace from Desai.
  • Gournelos' winner helped cut the lead to two before VC ballooned the lead to 13-8 on two kills and an ace from Miocinovic.
  • A four-point run, led by a block from Schoenl and Desai, expanded the lead to 17-9.
  • Hunter got back within 21-17 on a block from Gomez and Cochran and a kill from Ahmed Mohamed.
  • Vassar rattled off the final four points of the set, led by a kill from Zheng and a block from first year Ari Canahuati and Desai, to earn its fourth straight sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Davis posted six kills, an ace and five digs while Bertini tallied five kills and eight digs.
  • Miocinovic recorded five kills and an ace along with Desai posting four kills, an ace and three blocks.
  • Zheng and Birnbaum each registered four kills while Idowu totaled three kills, an ace and four blocks.
  • Schoenl finished with 15 assists, three blocks and three digs and senior Casey McMenamin lifted a team-high nine digs.
For The Hawks
  • Gomez tallied a match-high seven kills while Kotuk posted six kills, an ace and three digs.
  • Cochran finished with six kills and two digs along with Gournelos adding four kills and four digs.
  • Mohamed garnered four winners while Wesley Stubbs registered 22 assists and 12 digs.
