No. 7 NYU Takes Down Hobart In Five Sets

Violets Outlast Statesmen on Saturday

GENEVA, NY - The #7-ranked New York University men's volleyball team defeated Hobart College 3-2 on Saturday, March 28. The Violets won the first set 25-15 but dropped the second 23-25. NYU came back to win the third set 25-23, but Hobart sent the match to a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth. In the fifth set, the Violets raced to a 15-11 win to secure the match. 

To open the match the two teams traded points back and forth, tying five times, before the Violets ran away with the set. A kill from Veer Agarwal finished off the set. 

NYU got out to an early lead in the second set, holding an advantage until they were tied 17-17. The Statesmen scored three points to increase their lead and go on to the victory. 

The Violets started the third set by taking a 4-0 lead that they never lost. They brought the lead to as many as 10 (17-7), but a late push from Hobart brought it within three. NYU collected kills from Charlie Clifford, Emerson Evans, and Jerry Feng to win the set.  

NYU held a steady lead throughout the fourth set, ahead 16-12, but an 8-1 scoring run for Hobart gave them the final lead. Clifford, Agarwal, and Cade Miller each notched a kill in a final effort. But, the Statesmen took the set to force a fifth. 

In the final set, the Violets went on a 5-0 scoring run and never fell behind. Clifford and Miller combined for eight of the Violets' 15 points. A big kill from Evans was the final nail in the set to seal the win. 

Clifford led the Violets with 22 kills, Evans followed with 14, and Feng added 11. 

Devyn Nguyen notched 55 assists and two service aces. 

The Violets will travel to take on Elmira College on Sunday, March 29, at 1:00pm in Elmira, NY.
