MADISON, NJ - The No. 20 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team began its eight-match road trip on Friday evening as the Brewers cruised to a 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 sweep over Drew after hitting .330 as a team. Vassar's record improves to 9-7 overall while the Rangers drop to 9-10.
First Set
- Following a 5-5 tie to begin the first set, Drew took a 7-5 advantage on a kill from Gio Martin.
- Back-to-back winners from junior Walter Birnbaum and senior James Zuckerman put the Brewers ahead 8-7.
- Drew regained the lead at 13-12 on a winner from Quinn Donohue before Vassar tallied the next seven points, led by a Birnbaum kill, to earn a 19-13 lead.
- The lead expanded to 23-17 on consecutive Birnbaum kills followed by a winner from first year Shawn Zheng to clinch the opening-set 25-18 win.
Second Set
- VC held a 6-4 lead to open the second set following two kills from junior Armaan Desai and a winner each from Birnbaum, Zheng and Zuckerman.
- The lead grew to 14-8 on two Zuckerman kills, a winner from sophomore Petar Miocinovic and a kill from junior Parker Schoenl.
- Vassar pushed the advantage to 18-11 behind two more winners from Miocinovic.
- The Rangers reduced the lead to 19-15 on consecutive kills from Isaiah Harris and Jason Barbosa.
- First year Ari Canahuati's kill expanded the lead to 22-16 before Drew answered with two winners from Matthew Adegbite to get back within two at 22-20.
- Vassar used two kills from Zheng and one winner from first year George Idowu to score the second set victory.
Third Set
- Drew pulled ahead 7-4 to begin the third set on a kill and an ace from Donohue and a block from Lucas Mondin.
- Two kills from Miocinovic trimmed the advantage to 10-9 until a Mondin winner gave the Rangers a 16-12 lead.
- VC clawed back to even it at 18 following two kills from Zuckerman along with a winner each from Birnbaum and Desai.
- An ace from first year Darwin Davis put VC in front 19-18 before a Michael Shipman kill tied the set at 20.
- After Drew evened the set at 23, back-to-back kills from Davis and Birnbaum completed the sweep for the Brewers.
For The Brewers
- Birnbaum tallied a team-high 11 kills (.364), six assists and three digs while Desai buried nine kills.
- Zuckerman added six winners and three digs along with Zheng posting six kills and three digs.
- Miocinovic registered six kills and four digs while Schoenl handed out 31 assists and lifted five digs.
- Senior Casey McMenamin lifted a team-high seven digs.
For The Rangers
- Martin finished with seven kills, an ace and a block while Donohue tallied seven kills, 19 assists and three blocks.
- Adgebite recorded six kills and an ace along with Mondin adding six kills, a block and seven digs.
- Barbosa posted three kills and four digs while Eric Forget lifted a match-high eight digs.
