St. John Fisher Ends Virginia Trip With Sweeps Over Averett, Regent

DANVILLE, VA – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team ended its four-game trip in Virginia with three-set sweeps of Averett (25-14, 25-12, 25-17) and Regent (25-14, 25-22, 25-14) on Friday night. The Cardinals, who entered the day having lost four of their last five matches, improved to 10-9 overall with the victories. 

Match 1: St. John Fisher 3, Averett 0

The Cardinals cruised to a 25-14 victory in the first set, during which they registered a .560 hitting percentage while smashing 15 kills. Freshmen outside hitters Avery Kielbasinski and Giancarlo Martinez had three kills apiece during an 11-3 run that put St. John Fisher ahead 18-7. Martinez led the Cardinals with five total kills in the frame. 

St. John Fisher kept matters brief in the second set with a 25-12 trouncing of Averett. The Cardinals piled up 14 kills – Kielbasinski, Martinez and senior outside hitter Casey Jackson led the way with three apiece – while hitting .522. After a 6-4 start to the frame, the Cardinals pulled away from the Cougars with a 13-4 run that gave them a 12-point lead, 19-7. Senior outside hitter Jimmy Roberts and junior middle blocker Alex Quinn each slammed two kills during the surge. 

The Cardinals hit .345 and once again amassed 15 kills as they completed the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third set. Kielbasinski paced Fisher with five kills while hitting .833 in the frame, and fellow freshman outside hitter Dylan Leong added four while hitting .250. Quinn and sophomore outside hitter Evan Hernandez each recorded a pair of service aces. 

Match Notes

  • The Cardinals amassed 44 total kills while hitting a season-best .468 in the match. 

  • Kielbasinski led the Cardinals with 13 total points on 11 kills and three total blocks, including one solo. 

  • Kielbasinski led Fisher with a .647 hitting percentage in the match (min. 10 attempts). 

  • Martinez set a season high in kills (9), total points (9.5) and hitting percentage (.353, min. 10 attempts).

  • Quinn amassed a career-high nine points on six kills, two service aces and two block assists. 

  • Hernandez and senior Aiden Calhoun each ended the match with 16 assists. 

  • Calhoun led the Cardinals with three service aces. 


Match 2: St. John Fisher 3, Regent 0

Senior outside hitter Gabe La Robardiere and sophomore outside hitter Coleton Welter each slammed four kills to lead the Cardinals to a 25-14 victory in the opening frame. The Cardinals had 13 kills overall in the set, while Regent managed only five and spotted Fisher seven points on attacking errors. 

The Cardinals hit under .100 in the second set but finished strong to claim a 25-22 victory. Fisher had five kills as it outscored Regent 7-4 down the stretch, with two coming from La Robardiere and one each from Welter, junior outside hitter Sonepith Keoviengsamay and sophomore outside hitter Nathan Dreger. Regent also hit under .100 in the frame and committed five attacking errors. 

St. John Fisher finished off the sweep with a 25-14 victory in the third set. La Robardiere and Welter each had four more kills, and Dreger added three. Keoviengsamay added three service aces. 

Match Notes

  • Welter led the Cardinals with 13.5 points. He had 12 kills while hitting .269 to go with a service ace and a block assist. 

  • La Robardiere finished with 12 points, all of them on kills. He hit .308 in the match. 

  • Senior Tyler Cohen led the Cardinals with 21 assists. 

  • Cohen and Keoviengsamay each had 10 digs.
