HOBOKEN, NJ – The No. 10 MIT men's volleyball team earned the program's first NCAA Tournament victory with a sweep of St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Thursday afternoon in the play-in game of the NCAA Tournament at the Canavan Arena on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 3, St. Joseph's (L.I.) 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22)
- Records: No. 10 MIT (23-7 Overall); St. Joseph's University (20-8 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: Back-to-back kills from Nate Toth helped MIT build a 14-9 lead and a kill from Alexander Garrett made it a 20-12 advantage for the Engineers. Henry Garewal then gave MIT the set with a kill that made it 25-17.
- Set 2: Chase Meyer gave the Golden Eagles a 17-16 lead, but a Toth kill and block from Michael Rini and Garewal put MIT back up 19-16. A from Hansen Fan and a Maddox Brandenburg block gave the Engineers set two, 25-19.
- Set 3: A 5-0 run capped by an ace from Toth put MIT in the lead 13-7. The Golden Eagles hung around and eventually pulled to within one at 22-21 off block from Meyer and Chris Saricola. A block from Carlos Rijos, Fan, and Jensen Fiskin got MIT match point, and Rijos sealed the match with an ace.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Braeden Baker led all players with 17 kills and Toth added 12, Baker and Toth also led the way with three aces each.
- Colin Zimmerman had a match high 31 assists while Fisken had 15.
- Toth led MIT with seven digs while Zimmerman contributed six.
- MIT hit .333 as a team in the match.
