POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The #9-ranked New York University men's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a five-set win over #T-20-ranked Vassar College on Wednesday, April 1. After going down in the first two sets, 15-25 and 20-25, the Violets pulled back to win the next three 25-23, 25-19, 15-9.
The Violets kept the opening set within one until Vassar scored nine unanswered points to give them a 10 point lead to end the set.
The two teams tied 10 times in the second set with the Violets keeping it close through the end but, the Brewers edged out the win.
The third set followed similarly, with the teams trading points. Emerson Evans came up with a big kill to tie the set at 23-23. A block by Evans and Veer Agarwal gave them the advantage to win the set, 25-23.
After tying 15 times, the Violets went on a 6-0 with kills from Evans and Charlie Clifford to force a fifth set.
Tied at 4-4, the Violets scored three straight to pull ahead and never lost the lead. A kill from Clifford finished off the match.
Evans led for the Violets with 21 kills and Clifford followed with 15. Both notched one service ace.
Devyn Nguyen added 44 assists.
The Violets will now head to the United Volleyball Conference tournament set to begin on Friday, April 10.
